Grippers

Imagine what might happen if a bracket or other mounting piece broke free and let an expensive piece of equipment you were working with go free. A loss of pressure would probably be the least of your worries! This is potentially a very dangerous scenario and it could cost quite a bit of money to repair the damage, assuming that you don’t have to replace a large portion of the air circuit you were working with to begin with.

Think if you were using a gripper to hold onto something that had to be finished in order to fulfill a customer order. This kind of situation would turn from bad to worse in that case!

SMC Pneumatics produces high-quality holding pieces that can lock onto exterior objects from almost any angle. This is especially useful if you’re trying to install a piece of pneumatic equipment in a place where extraneous movement is potentially a big problem. Keep this in mind if you’re redoing cylinders, fittings, valves or any other part of your installation. Our national distributorship can locate components that work with the tools you already have on hand, so compatibility won’t be an issue.

All of our parts are expressly designed to work together. Take the MHZ2 parallel units for example.

Grippers – Series MHZ2

Our parallel grippers hold on to objects from inside and outside positions. Applicable to both internal and external bore grip with the same equipment because of an increased quantity of cross rollers in the parallel slide part.

Also, each of them comes with a space for mounting a single acting spring for normally-closed operations. Black anodized 6061-T6 aluminum is used on all main body parts, and comes with an interchangeable mounting section.

On top of this, they’re all designed with functionality in mind. In most circumstances, you might not expect much from a small piece like this. In fact, many people more than likely don’t pay much attention to the units they have installed. This might very well be due to the fact that stock grippers from a majority of vendors are essentially small pieces of material that do very little besides cling to a surface.

Once you try the MHZ2 series, you might very well find many jobs for them on your work site that you might not have even realized you had. Think about how much functionality is shoved into such a small package before you say that every gripper is created equally.

Typical Specifications:

• Operating pressure … Double acting type.

• Ambient and fluid temperature … 0° to 60°C

Each of these devices comes in several standard sizes as well, which can help if you need to match the dimensions of a specific bore you might find yourself working with. To make reordering parts easier, SMC Pneumatics has assigned an individual serial code to every design.

Part numbers reflect bore sizes. For instance, the MHZ2-10DN supports a 10 mm bore. If it featured a suffix of -16DN, then the gripper would work with 16 mm bores. You’ll also find 20 and 25 mm options, which are particularly useful for larger pieces of equipment.

Use Cases

While it might not look like it, parallel pneumatic grippers are actually a specific type of pneumatic actuator. Depending on the part of the country you’re doing work in, you might have gotten used to calling them tooling jaws, fingers or any of a host of slang terms. If you combine them with other pneumatic components, then you can use them as part of a pick and place system that gives you the freedom to pick a component up and move it somewhere else during the handling process.

As a result, there are countless jobs you can send these components to work on. Likewise, they’re useful in almost any manufacturing or materials handling workshop that already has a pneumatic system installed. If you currently lack a pneumatic system, then you shouldn’t have a great deal of difficulty installing a new run. After all, the MHZ2 series of parallel grippers are made with compatibility in mind.

In most cases, all you’ll need are a few other pieces from SMC and sufficient air pressure to get started. Perhaps most important is the fact that they’re easy to work with for anyone who has a little experience with pneumatic equipment, so your technicians can just pick up our tooling jaws and get to work.
