Peltier Thermo Controllers

Just a few degrees one way or the other is more than enough to turn money into nothing. That's because many sensitive business processes rely on very specific temperatures. If your workshop is too far out of spec, then you'll end up ruining whatever it is that you're working on. In a best-case scenario, you'll end up having to start again from scratch.

No matter what kind of workflows you're dealing with, you need to be sure the temperature is exactly where it needs to be. In some cases, operating equipment at too high a temperature can actually damage something. Sensitive industrial processes can actually turn dangerous if you're not careful.

That's where Pletier thermo controllers come into play. By using these advanced semiconductor-driven units, you'll never have to worry about the overall temperature of the system you're working with. SMC Pneumatics offers a full line of these handy devices, which gives you the freedom to select whichever kind would work best in your particular use case.

Should you not be as familiar with this technology as some of the other thermal control options on the market, take a moment to look over some of the unique advantages it has to offer.

What Makes Peltier Thermo Controllers So Different

You might see a Peltier device referred to as a Thermo-Electric Cooler or TEC. This is because one of the most common applications is to electrically cool down a thermal load. Due to the fact that they're made with silicon in the same way that computer chips are manufactured, TEC assemblies tend to be small enough to fit into most business operations regardless of the size of the equipment that surrounds them. This also makes them extremely modular.

You can find dozens of different Peltier cooler parts available from their original vendors, so you can bend them to whichever particular needs you might have. Rack-mount parts enable you to build a circuit upward the same way that IT personnel build servers. You might want to mention that to the next technician who tries to tell you that traditional pneumatic and electronic equipment is obsolete. Rack-mounted TEC modules are a very visible testament to the advanced technology that this equipment represents.

Peltier units are compatible with a wide array of equipment as well, so you shouldn't have to worry about what you're currently using. You won't have to invest in a great deal of new gear just to use your new thermal controller. Power cable conversion systems are available, for instance, which can help you integrate new devices into your existing installation. There are even converters for alarm signal cords.

Consider a pneumatic assembly line where various pieces of compressed air-driven equipment work in concert to construct finished goods. In this situation, engineers may have rigged an alarm system to alert operators and other pieces of equipment when a certain condition is met. It's possible to connect this circuit to Peltier thermo controllers along the line in order to form an efficient feedback loop.

Once such a loop is in place, any out of spec temperature reading will alert the TEC module and force the system to cool down before it begins to approach a potentially more dangerous thermal point.

Fortunately, these devices are always aware of how much they need to adjust the temperature in the workflow before allowing it to proceed.

How Peltier Thermo Controllers Work

In spite of their sophisticated design, these units invoke the services of surprisingly few moving parts. This is especially good news for those who will soon be tasked with maintaining them.

The onboard semiconductor senses which way the current is flowing through the TEC's two terminals. If it's moving in one direction, then it begins the cooling process. Once the flow of current shifts, it can switch off.

Semiconductors generally allow electricity to flow through them more easily in one direction than the other. This makes them almost ideal for this sort of application since they're essentially choosing between only two states. There's no need to use complicated electronic logic or any other sort of decision-making technology, which means there's much less to go wrong.

This also helps to greatly improve overall durability regardless of the setting they're used in. While this is the visible part of what's going on, it's not necessarily the most vital. These devices earned their name due to the fact that they operate based on the Peltier effect.

By transferring heat from one side of the device to the other using electricity, a Peltier cooler acts essentially as a purely solid state heat pump. That's where the limited number of moving parts comes from. These units create a heat flux where two different materials meet.

As a result, it has a long lifespan. Calculating the longevity of any one component is very difficult. However, it's easy to say that you shouldn't have to replace one of these modules for quite some time.

Unlike vapor compressed-based refrigeration equipment, there's no motor to go bad. The device simply cools itself down once the voltage is applied across those terminals. If you're used to having to periodically clean buildup on other components, then you're also in for a treat. Since they operate purely on the Peltier effect, there really isn't anything like an impeller to draw in dirt.

Integrating Peltier Thermo Controllers Work into Your Business

Perhaps you represent a larger enterprise that manages a fairly complex manufacturing operation. Alternatively, you might be a small business owner who has to make most decisions about purchasing new technology by yourself. How do you decide what kind of thermo controllers would fit into your existing operations the most smoothly?

You contact us online today and let the experts at SMC Pneumatics help you find the kind of equipment that you need. Our friendly and knowledgeable staff will be more than happy to show you every option out there, which means you'll be able to find parts that meet your budget as well as your needs.
