How Electric Actuators Differ From Other Types

So what makes this type of actuator different from hydraulic, pneumatic, thermal, magnetic, or mechanical? You have multiple options when choosing the component for your machine. In fact, you may argue that it’s better to stick with what you know. 

Yet we argue that electric actuators are useful and energy-efficient, especially since they are relatively less depending on fossil fuels. When you buy an electric actuator, you are investing in your machine’s future for the long-term. 

The power source makes a difference. Most actuators have different sources of energy, as outlined above. Pneumatic actuators, for example, receive energy from compressed air, depending on the air flow. Meanwhile, magnetic or thermal actuators rely on heat transfer courtesy of shape-memory alloys. 

Electric actuators, first and foremost, can also act as motors, running on either AC or DC currents. In some cases, these actuators are referred to as the motors, without a distinction. Thus, they effectively pull double-duty even if designated separately from their energy source. 

In other cases, these actuators require solenoids to provide the power source. They also vary in the types of currents, and their purposes. Why should you use an electric actuator? Because they deliver on precision when performing tasks, and with less noise. You can program how they will position and move valves, which is important when regulating what travels through the valves. How Do Electric Actuators Work

In simple terms, electric linear actuators receive a signal, and that signals them to carry out a designated task, usually a rotation. It’s very similar to how neural systems in the human body work when carrying signals. They use either AC or DC currents, alternating or direct. We will also refer to these actuators are motors, as other mechanics do. 

AC actuators or motors use the naturally alternating currents from their power source. They can adjust the voltage for various tasks, which is why they’re good for heavy-duty applications, factories, and power lines. Even so, they require energy input to make changes in rotations. Cars use AC motors to generate heat and air conditioning. 

There are two types of DC motors: servo and stepper. Both serve different purposes, due to the varying benefits of each actuator. 

Servo motors work thanks to electrical pulses. They are tiny but often promise high performance. In addition, servo motors are inexpensive, deliver speed control, as well as high feedback and torque. Usually when they rotate, they have fixed angles from 90 to 180 degrees. Also, they only work as hard as you need to, controlling speed based on the energy required for the task at hand. Usually, you will find a servo motor in small devices, like remote-controlled toys, elevators, rudders, and manufacturing machines. 

Stepper motors work in full rotation rather than in angles, and they convert electricity into mechanical energy. They divide the rotation into equal steps and then can use the division for speed control and precision.  While there’s less torque or feedback, they are good for when you need to control your speed, for delicate procedures. Cameras, 3D printers, and disc drives use stepper motors.
